Swire Marine Training Centre's (SMTC) First Advanced Behavioural Safety Course December 2008
17th December, 2008 - Throughout 2008, the training focus at SMTC has been primarily in the areas of Behavioural Safety, Corporate Management Systems, Bridge Team Management and Dynamic Positioning. In line with a significant development of system functionality and course content, SMTC recently hosted an inaugural Advanced Safety Management course for Senior Officers, the first of a series of such programmes designed to develop self confidence and motivation to supplement core competence. An international mix of Masters, Chief and First Engineers took part in interactive modules which included running anchors, dynamic stability and, uniquely, a practical crisis management exercise which utilised a "real time" simulated emergency scenario together with Local and Head Office Emergency Response Team input. This was supplemented by a presentation given by the Standard P&I Club on risk and claims.
The recent addition of the anchor handling, towing and engine room functionality has allowed SMTC to conduct more realistic and credible training sessions and participating Officers are now able to challenge themselves in a number of simulated and interactive exercises before facing the reality of the demanding offshore environment. Response to date has been positive and encouraging - we just need your continued support and enthusiasm to further manifest the challenge in 2009. To take part in either Behavioural Safety or Dynamic Positioning courses, SPO Officers should contact their manning agent for course availability.
