12th November, 2008 - General Manager for CSR at SPO has arranged for the CSR policy and initiatives at SPO to be more widely promulgated, by visitors to this web site, by clicking on SD/CSR in the top banner.

CSR is the new term that pulls together all the things a company does to be a good corporate citizen. It is also known as Sustainable Development (or “SD”), which was defined by Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland, the former Prime Minister of Norway and D-G Emeritus, World Health Organization, in the World Commission on Environment and Development report, “Our Common Future”, in April 1987 as “the development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of the future generations to meet their own needs.” Elsewhere it is known as the “triple bottom line” as it reports the results of a company in financial, environmental and social terms.

Full details of SPO’s Sustainable Development performance in 2007 can be accessed from a tab in the left hand navigation bar. Our 2008 SD report will be posted there also, by the end of Q2 2009, and this report will not only be produced in line with the worldwide standard “Global Reporting Initiative”, but will also have been subject to external independent audit to verify that the information given is true and accurate.

Also present in this section is the company’s Business Ethics policy – including that all our employees, and contractors’ employees, will be treated with integrity, respect and fairness, and employed in a safe and responsible way, and that we will not work with either suppliers or clients who either seek or offer bribes to obtain any business advantage.

We also publish our Green Guidelines that detail how we are working today in a responsible way to avoid harming the environment more than man has done already.
