Environment

Objectives

Swire Pacific Offshore endorses the Swire group environmental policy, which requires group companies to ensure that, whenever practicable, their activities are ahead of legal requirements and standards for environmental best practice in the countries where they operate.

We recognise that we have a duty to continually strive to lessen our environmental impact and to be transparent and accountable for our business operations. Swire Pacific Offshore works closely with its clients on HS&E issues and has participated in a variety of environmental initiatives for client operating companies. As a learning organisation, we are always open to new concepts and initiatives that will help to improve our environmental performance.

Swire Pacific Offshore’s Environmental Management Plan has six main aims:
To reduce the quantity of polluting substances discharged into the environment
To increase the use of environmentally acceptable materials
To use modern equipment and technology in place of those considered harmful
To minimise the impact of all our activities on our surroundings
To recycle and reuse products wherever possible
To encourage environmental awareness amongst employees and suppliers

A target of ZERO unplanned releases has been set. This includes oil and chemical spills and the release of ozone-depleting gases such as HALON/CFC to the atmosphere. Reporting of accidental spills/releases is required and must be recorded through the appropriate procedures and reported to relevant authorities.

To implement the Environmental Management Plan we have incorporated specific procedures and guidelines within our onboard Safety Management System (SMS). All vessels are provided and must comply with an externally reviewed and approved Shipboard Oil Pollution Emergency Plan (SOPEP), which forms part of the Emergency Guidance Manual. This document complies with the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL 73/78), Annex I, Regulation 26.

Vessels recently built for SPO have been fitted with Low-Nox engines, sewage treatment plants, waste macerators and garbage compactors. Vessels undergoing routine dry-docking are coated with TBT-free anti-foul applications.

To promote environmental awareness, ships’ staff are encouraged to separate waste, maintain high standards of housekeeping and observe proper procedures for pollution prevention. All efforts are made to eradicate waste discharge to the sea, all scraps and engine room waste are bagged, and all sludge is discharged to shore tankers.

The Garbage Management Plan found on board all vessels includes detailed plans and instructions for garbage handling and disposal charts.

These performance indicators are verified by random internal and external audits and management inspection. Senior management of Swire Pacific Offshore also works closely with clients to ensure their Environmental Management Plan complements and dovetails with our own.
