With more than a century's experience in deep-sea shipping, towage and salvage, Swire's involvement in the offshore oil industry began in 1975 when Swire Pacific established a joint venture with Northern Offshore Limited, a UK-based offshore support company. Swire Pacific Offshore (SPO) was established that year as a wholly owned subsidiary of Swire Pacific Limited to hold Swire's interest in the Singapore newly registered joint venture, Swire Northern Offshore (Pte) Limited and, subsequently, to act as the holding company for the SPO Group. Initially, Northern Offshore was responsible for developing offshore support operations to the west of Suez while the joint venture, Swire Northern Offshore (Pte) Limited, was to develop similar operations to the east of Suez. An outport office was established soon afterwards in Dubai to support vessels working in the Middle East. In 1980, SPO acquired full control of the business and assets of the joint venture.
Swire Pacific Offshore is part of the Swire Pacific Group
of companies, one of the leading commercial groups in the Asia Pacific region. Based in Hong Kong, publicly quoted Swire Pacific Limited has five operating divisions: Property, Aviation, Beverages, Marine Services and Trading & Industrial. The property division portfolio includes major developments in Hong Kong, mainland China and Florida. The aviation division includes international carrier Cathay Pacific Airways, regional carrier Dragonair and Air Hong Kong, an all-cargo carrier, as well as aircraft engineering, aero-engine overhaul interests, in-flight catering, ramp handling, and air cargo terminal operations.
Swire is an Anchor Bottler for The Coca-Cola Company in Hong Kong, mainland China, Taiwan and the USA; its trading and industrial portfolio ranges from the retail of sportswear and automobiles to waste management and the manufacture of aluminium cans.
Our affiliated company, Swire Oilfield Services (SOS), established in 1979, is the world’s largest supplier of specialist offshore cargo carrying units to the global energy industry and is a leading supplier of modular systems, offshore aviation services, chemical handling and onshore services. The business has a significant global reach in major oil and gas regions, with operations in Europe, West Africa, North America, Australia, Brazil, India, Russia and Asia.
Established in 1975, we have built a reputation as a leading service provider to the offshore oil and gas industry with a network that spans the globe.
SPO owns and operates more than 80 offshore support vessels. SPO's fleet is modern, with an average age of 7.91 years as at end August 2016, and a large proportion of these vessels are equipped with dynamic positioning systems (DP1 or DP2). The fleet includes a mix of Anchor Handling Tug Supply (AHTS) vessels, Platform Supply Vessels (PSV), Seismic Survey Vessels, Wind-farm Installation Vessels, Accommodation Vessels and Multi-Purpose Offshore Vessels. We are fully equipped to support a wide range of offshore activities, including seismic survey, exploration, drilling, pipe-lay, subsea construction, production and FPSO operations.
Through acquisitions and joint ventures, SPO and its subsidiaries are also able to offer salvage, oil spill preparedness and response, wind-farm installation and support. Swire Survey Services Division was established in 2007 and offers a one-stop solution to support the offshore seismic industry with a proven track record for providing a range of services, from servicing 2D and 3D acquisition surveys and source prospect to operating support and DP cable laying services. In 2008, SPO extended its service offering marine salvage and oil spill preparedness and response services. Providing services to the offshore wind industry was a natural progression for Swire, given our long history of successful marine and engineering operations and strong focus on the environment. In February 2010, the company acquired Blue Ocean Ships and renamed it Swire Blue Ocean, based in Copenhagen. In February 2012, SPO acquired Seabed AS, a Norwegian based company. Along with the acquisition, SPO took ownership of ‘Seabed Worker’, a state of the art DP2 Multi-Purpose Support Vessel (MPSV) and high specification subsea ROVs held by Seabed AS which will help SPO extend its range of service offerings to its clients. A second DP2 vessel, the “Seabed Prince” was added to the Swire Seabed fleet in May 2012.
With a strong emphasis on operational excellence and a proactive attitude towards Health, Safety and the Environment (HSE), SPO places great importance on providing reliability for its partners through quality service. The establishment of a dedicated marine training centre in 2007 with a state-of-the-art simulator has reinforced this commitment to high standards, even under challenging conditions in harsh operating environments. The simulator underwent a multi-million dollar upgrade in 2011 so that our seafarers can train on the latest generation of vessels even before they have left the shipyard.
Headquartered in Singapore, SPO and its subsidiaries have regional offices in Angola, Australia, Azerbaijan, Brazil, Brunei, Cameroon, Canada, Denmark, Equatorial Guinea, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Norway, Qatar, the Philippines, Texas, Trinidad & Tobago, Russia, Scotland and the United Arab Emirates, and operate vessels in every major oil exploration region outside of North America.
The regional offices provide full commercial, operational and technical support to the vessels working within their region. The Singapore, Dubai and Cameroon offices are also equipped with large warehouse facilities for the storage of critical spare parts together with salvage and environmental response equipment. In each region SPO endeavours, as far as practically possible, to implement local synergies when it comes to its employees and the various equipment and consumables required for its operations. Head Office provides high level technical, commercial, operational, marketing, financial, accounting, legal, insurance and IT support and governance to the business across the globe.
